Let's Be Honest...

Alright I admit it! I have done absolutely nothing for roughly a month. Don't ask me why, there is no excuse. I have been having a blast playing some old games and I guess I just didn't have motivation to finish any projects.

Last night was National Game Development Meetup Day and our Charlotte Game Development group had an awesome meeting. We decided on a first game that won't be too hard but definitely isn't Pong, Tetris, or Breakout (this is truly an achievement). The game will be similar to Combat for the old Atari (this is 3rd party information I never actually played Combat). Two kids will be in a classroom with desks as obstacles. You can move in 8 directions, and the object is to throw your paper airplane off walls and around desks to hit the other kid. See the amazing concept art I created for details:

Marc J. (Group founder) and I will be working on the programming, while Jason and Megan handle all the graphics. Marc is a veteran programmer who has worked on old Atari games in the past. He wants to get in the game again and learn DirectX in C++. I have a feeling that as soon as he learns some basics of the API I am going to be taking programming advice from him.

I have already learned a lot about group mechanics of a project. This will be my first venture ever with team programming. I'm a little scared, but willing to embark on the journey. It's also a great lesson in teamwork. We've already discovered some obstacles with group projects while trying to order a pizza and figure out meeting times. I can only imagine the pains of working on a larger project.

I will release updates of the game if they become available. Although I feel that the game probably won't be playable until it's complete.

On a related note, all personal projects will stop for the time being. I want to dedicate all of my programming time to the game. This may have the opposite effect though, I may get back into programming and then go back to personal projects when waiting for the next meeting. Mark and I will be tandem programming for this first project because he doesn't know much of the DirectX framework and API calls. This means that we will only be coding once or twice a week.

I also made a small change to this journal. I posted a link page and an article page with a list of all my Game Dev links and articles. There aren't many in there now I just wanted the framework up so I could ditch some of these favorites on my computer and use it as a personal reference if nothing else. See ya soon!
